Grenada County, located along I-55 in central-north Mississippi, is increasingly becoming a target area for predatory towing operations. What started as organized schemes centered in Memphis has expanded south along the I-55 corridor, and Grenada County truck stops and rest areas are now in the crosshairs.
Predatory towing operations that initially focused on the Memphis area have expanded their targeting southward into Mississippi. Grenada County’s location on I-55 makes it a natural expansion point. Truck drivers stopping for fuel, food, or rest at truck stops in Grenada County may not realize they’re vulnerable to the same organized towing schemes documented in Memphis.
These operations work by positioning tow trucks at private parking lots, using parking management companies to claim authority, making cash-only demands, and in some cases, using armed employees to intimidate drivers. The goal is simple: seize vehicles, demand immediate payment, and move on before drivers can contact authorities or legal counsel.
In March 2024, a federal RICO lawsuit was filed against A-1’s Towing, CAC Operations, S-Line, and related entities by trucking companies including Western Express, MHT Group, and Church Transportation. The lawsuit, filed in the Western District of Tennessee, alleges a coordinated scheme targeting commercial vehicles along the I-55 corridor—the same corridor that runs through Grenada County. The lawsuit seeks over $5 million in damages.
This is not a handful of isolated bad actors. This is a documented, organized operation with multiple defendants, coordinated practices, and demonstrated intent to systematically target trucking company vehicles. The federal government’s RICO statute is designed for exactly this kind of organized crime.
Grenada County has major truck stops and truck traffic passing through regularly. This makes it attractive to predatory towing operations because:
– Drivers are away from their home base and may be unfamiliar with local towing practices
– Trucks are often parked for only short periods, making vehicle theft easier
– I-55 corridor traffic provides a steady stream of targets
Predatory towing operations count on drivers being isolated, confused, and desperate to get their vehicle back quickly—conditions that make them more likely to pay cash without questioning the tow company’s authority.
Take these steps immediately:
If a tow company tows your vehicle without legal authority—meaning they cannot demonstrate a valid contract with the property owner, proper signage, or a legitimate parking violation—they may be liable for conversion (taking your property without permission). You may be entitled to recover:
Don’t assume you have to accept an unauthorized tow. You have legal rights and potential remedies.
Dozens of trucking companies and hundreds of drivers have been targeted by these operations. There is strength in documenting what happened to you and pursuing legal action. Your case adds to the evidence of organized predatory towing and may help protect other drivers.
